The Murugappa Group, originally known for launching Hercules cycles in 1951, has transitioned into semiconductor manufacturing in Sanand, Gujarat. The company, CG Semi, is a joint venture with Japan's Renesas Electronics and Thailand's Star Microelectronics,
focusing on semiconductor chip production. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the commercial production at the facility on July 4, 2026. The factory employs a significant number of women, who have undergone specialized training in Malaysia to handle machine operations independently. This shift marks a significant step in India's semiconductor mission, with chips being supplied to both domestic and international markets.
