What's Happening?
The virtual reality fitness application, Supernatural, has officially launched in Early Access on Meta Quest as an independent version. This relaunch is spearheaded by a team of 15 individuals, including all the original fitness coaches and some design
and support staff from the prior Meta-owned iteration. The app is now available with 'thousands of workouts,' and users of the legacy edition have the option to transfer their progress, including points, start dates, streaks, favorites, and badges, until December 3rd. James Senior, CEO of Supernatural, expressed enthusiasm for the comeback, emphasizing that Early Access allows the community to help shape future developments. The roadmap for Supernatural includes weekly additions of new workouts, more music, the reintroduction of multiplayer workouts (Supernatural Together), enhanced environments, and a new mobile companion app for tracking progress and heart rate. The service is available via subscription at $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annually.
Why It's Important?
The relaunch of Supernatural as an independent entity is significant for the VR fitness market and its user base. It demonstrates the resilience of dedicated communities and development teams in bringing back beloved services, especially after corporate transitions. For users, the ability to transfer their historical data is crucial, preserving their investment and progress within the platform. This move also signals a potential shift in the VR fitness landscape, where independent developers can thrive by focusing on community feedback and iterative development. The planned features, such as multiplayer workouts and a mobile companion app, indicate a commitment to enhancing user engagement and providing a more comprehensive fitness tracking experience, which could attract new users and solidify its position in the competitive VR fitness sector.
What's Next?
Supernatural's immediate future involves a phased rollout of new features and content as outlined in its roadmap. Users can expect weekly additions of workouts and music, with the highly anticipated return of multiplayer workouts and enhanced virtual environments. The development of a new mobile companion app will further integrate the VR fitness experience with daily life, allowing for better progress tracking and heart rate monitoring. The success of this Early Access phase will largely depend on user feedback and the development team's ability to implement requested features and improvements. This relaunch could also serve as a case study for other VR applications considering independent operations, highlighting the importance of community engagement and continuous innovation in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Beyond the Headlines
The return of Supernatural as an independent VR fitness app carries broader implications for the future of virtual reality and digital ownership. In an era where digital services can be discontinued or acquired, leaving users without access to their accumulated data or preferred platforms, Supernatural's comeback offers a hopeful precedent. It underscores the power of community demand and the potential for original creators to reclaim and evolve their products. This event also highlights the growing maturity of the VR fitness industry, moving beyond novelty to establish sustainable business models and dedicated user bases. The emphasis on community-driven development in Early Access could foster a more collaborative relationship between developers and users, potentially setting a new standard for how digital products are built and maintained in the long term, ensuring user investment is valued and preserved.
