What's Happening?
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, with support from Verizon, has initiated the Readiness for Resiliency (R4R) Mitigation Grant program. This new initiative aims to bolster small businesses' ability to withstand natural disasters by providing $5,000
grants for mitigation efforts. Disasters can severely impact small businesses through structural damage, supply chain disruptions, and communication breakdowns. The grants are intended to help businesses invest in measures such as ensuring power continuity, improving communication redundancy, addressing flood vulnerabilities, and protecting critical equipment before a disaster strikes. To qualify, small business owners must complete the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s disaster preparedness checklist and a Disaster Resilience course on Verizon’s Small Business Digital Ready platform.
Why It's Important?
This grant program is crucial for enhancing the resilience of small businesses across the U.S., which are often disproportionately affected by natural disasters. Many small businesses lack the resources and planning to recover quickly, with a significant number unable to sustain payroll for more than a few weeks during temporary closures. By investing in pre-disaster mitigation, the program helps prevent permanent closures, safeguarding local economies and employment. The initiative addresses a critical gap between small business confidence in recovery and their actual preparedness levels, as only 31% have a disaster plan despite 94% believing they can recover. A more resilient small business community contributes to a stronger national economy.
What's Next?
Eligible small business owners can apply for the $5,000 R4R Mitigation Grant through November 15, 2026, by proposing a disaster mitigation project within their application. Grant recipients will be notified by January 15, 2027, and must use the funds to complete their approved projects by April 30, 2027. Additionally, applicants will be automatically registered for the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s R4R disaster recovery program, which offers an additional $5,000 grant if a qualifying disaster impacts their region. This ongoing support aims to create a more robust and prepared small business sector nationwide.
Beyond the Headlines
The program highlights a growing recognition of the need for proactive, rather than reactive, disaster management strategies, particularly for small businesses. It also underscores the role of corporate partnerships, like that between the U.S. Chamber Foundation and Verizon, in addressing societal challenges. The emphasis on education and planning through required courses and checklists suggests a long-term vision for fostering a culture of preparedness. This initiative could serve as a model for other sectors and regions, promoting a more integrated approach to disaster resilience that combines financial aid with educational resources and strategic planning.
