What's Happening?
The Loewe Foundation Craft Prize will hold its 10th edition ceremony on April 11, 2027, in Milan, coinciding with the eve of Milan Design Week. This marks the first time the traveling ceremony will be hosted in Milan. The foundation will also stage a major
exhibition recognizing a decade of the Craft Prize, which will open on the inaugural day of Design Week and run through April 28. Submissions for the prize are currently open until October 15, with an expert panel set to shortlist 30 works based on criteria such as originality, artistic vision, execution, material excellence, and innovative value. All shortlisted works will be displayed in Milan. The Loewe Foundation, established in 1988 by Enrique Loewe, continues to promote creativity and educational programs under the direction of Sheila Loewe, focusing on craft, art, design, photography, poetry, and dance. The prize itself, conceived by former creative director Jonathan Anderson, was first awarded in Madrid in 2017 and has since traveled to cities including London, Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, New York, and Singapore. The ninth edition in 2026 awarded South Korean ceramic artist Jongjin Park for his sculpture, 'Strata of Illusion'.
Why It's Important?
The Loewe Foundation Craft Prize's decision to host its 2027 ceremony and a decade-long exhibition in Milan during Design Week significantly elevates the global profile of craft as a recognized art form. Milan Design Week is a premier international event, and this placement will expose the intricate and innovative works of craft artists to a vast audience of designers, art enthusiasts, and industry professionals. This move underscores a growing appreciation for artisanal skill and creativity in an era often dominated by mass production. For the U.S. craft community, this international spotlight can inspire greater participation and recognition, potentially fostering new opportunities for American artists on a global stage. The prize's emphasis on originality, artistic vision, and material excellence sets a high standard, encouraging innovation within various craft disciplines, from textiles and ceramics to jewelry and bookbinding. The foundation's ongoing commitment to promoting creativity and protecting cultural heritage also reinforces the value of traditional and contemporary craft practices, ensuring their continued relevance and development.

The exhibition will run until April 28, providing an extended period for public viewing. The award ceremony for the 10th edition will take place on April 11, 2027, the day before Design Week officially begins. Beyond the Headlines
The Loewe Foundation Craft Prize's consistent global presence, culminating in its 10th-anniversary celebration in Milan, highlights a broader cultural shift towards valuing artisanal craftsmanship in a technologically advanced world. This initiative transcends mere artistic recognition; it fosters a dialogue about the enduring human need for tangible, meticulously created objects. In an increasingly digital landscape, the prize champions the tactile, the handmade, and the unique, challenging the notion that craft is a lesser art form. The inclusion of diverse craft disciplines, from ceramics to bookbinding, underscores the versatility and depth of human creativity across various materials and techniques. This sustained international platform not only provides economic opportunities for craftspeople but also encourages the preservation of traditional skills while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of innovation. The foundation's commitment to cultural heritage, as evidenced by its Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, positions craft not just as a commercial endeavor but as a vital component of global cultural identity and artistic expression.
