What's Happening?
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is focusing on accelerating the speed to power for large load customers through a new role titled Director, Speed to Power—Flexibility Solutions. This position is part of PG&E's Strategy and Growth team, which is dedicated
to long-term strategic and infrastructure planning. The Director will work to unlock capacity and bring forward in-service dates by leveraging PG&E's leadership in demand response, Virtual Power Plants (VPP), and storage. The role involves developing and managing risk mitigation strategies, ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards, and advocating for solutions to regulatory and policy barriers. The Director will report to the Senior Vice President of the Commercial Growth Organization and will be responsible for designing, commercializing, and scaling flexibility programs that utilize diverse resources such as data centers, EV charging, and residential VPPs.
Why It's Important?
The creation of this role is significant as it addresses the growing demand for electricity and the need for a more flexible and resilient energy grid. By accelerating the speed to power, PG&E aims to reduce interconnection timelines and execution risks, which can lead to cost savings for customers and the company. This initiative is crucial for PG&E to remain competitive and meet the increasing energy demands of California, the world's fourth-largest economy. The focus on flexibility solutions also aligns with broader industry trends towards decentralized energy resources and the integration of renewable energy sources, which are essential for achieving sustainability goals and reducing carbon emissions.
What's Next?
The Director will collaborate with various teams to develop and implement flexibility-based connection strategies, such as FlexConnect and T Flex programs. These programs will allow customers to adjust load profiles to avoid network constraints until upgrades are completed. The role will also involve regular travel to support customer engagement and project execution. PG&E will continue to monitor and report on key performance indicators related to interconnection timelines and grid flexibility, providing insights to senior leadership and stakeholders. The success of this role could lead to further expansion of flexibility programs and influence regulatory and policy changes in the energy sector.
