What's Happening?
Vodafone IoT is set to enhance its global coverage by launching satellite-based connectivity services in collaboration with Iridium and Skylo. This initiative aims to eliminate 'white spots' in outdoor device tracking by integrating standards-based technology,
which offers advantages over legacy systems. The new services are expected to be commercially available in 2026. Vodafone IoT has been using satellite technology since 2016 through a partnership with Inmarsat, now part of Viasat. The new partnerships will allow Vodafone IoT to offer seamless connectivity to its customers, treating the satellite networks as additional roaming networks. This development is particularly significant for applications such as cattle tracking in remote areas of the U.S., where mobile networks are unavailable.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of satellite connectivity by Vodafone IoT is poised to significantly impact various industries by providing reliable tracking and connectivity solutions in remote areas. This move is particularly beneficial for sectors like agriculture, where tracking livestock in areas without mobile coverage is crucial. Additionally, the integration of satellite technology into IoT applications can enhance logistics, connected vehicles, and shipping container tracking. As the cost of satellite connectivity decreases, more industries are likely to adopt these solutions, potentially leading to increased efficiency and innovation in IoT applications. The U.S. market, with its vast remote areas, stands to gain significantly from this development.
What's Next?
Vodafone IoT plans to roll out Iridium-based services after the summer, followed by Skylo-based services later in the year. As these services become commercially available in 2026, industries that rely on remote tracking and connectivity are expected to adopt these solutions. The U.S. market, identified as having significant potential, may see increased adoption of satellite IoT applications, particularly in agriculture and logistics. Vodafone IoT's continued expansion and partnerships could lead to further innovations and applications in the IoT space.
