cooling efforts. The mine requires more than 140 megawatts of refrigeration to maintain a workable environment, equivalent to running about 40,000 tons of refrigeration continuously. Despite completing two of the deepest shafts in the U.S., the mine has not yet commenced production due to ongoing permitting issues and litigation. The company has invested $200 million in rehabilitating and deepening the shafts, but the extreme heat and water inflow have complicated the development process.
