What's Happening?
QTS Data Centers has announced a $5 million grant aimed at bolstering workforce development in Eastern Iowa. The initiative is designed to support high school and community college trade programs, as well as create a pre-apprenticeship program in collaboration
with the Iowa State Building and Construction Trades Council. The company is also partnering with local unions to ensure a steady pipeline of skilled workers. This investment comes as QTS works to operationalize its data center in Cedar Rapids, which currently employs about 4,500 people on-site daily. The project is expected to create 100-120 permanent jobs upon completion, with additional indirect jobs generated through ongoing operations.
Why It's Important?
The investment by QTS Data Centers is significant as it addresses the growing demand for skilled tradespeople in Iowa, a need that is projected to increase over the next decade. By funding educational programs and apprenticeships, QTS is not only preparing a future workforce for its own operations but also contributing to the broader economic development of the region. This initiative is expected to create a multiplier effect, benefiting local businesses and the community by providing job opportunities and supporting economic growth. The grant also helps educational institutions manage rising costs, making trade education more accessible and affordable.
What's Next?
The grant is anticipated to impact thousands of students and apprentices, providing them with the skills needed for future employment in the trades. As the data center project progresses, QTS and its partners will continue to develop and refine the pre-apprenticeship and training programs. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other regions facing similar workforce challenges, potentially leading to further investments in workforce development across the country.
