What's Happening?
Digital Realty, a prominent cloud- and carrier-neutral data center platform provider, is set to develop a new subsea cable landing station (CLS) at its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles. This initiative is a collaborative effort with Assured Communications,
a company specializing in subsea infrastructure design and delivery. The project aims to enhance the connection between subsea cable systems and terrestrial networks within Digital Realty’s Los Angeles campus. The planned CLS will offer essential infrastructure for landing and powering subsea cables, enabling operators to establish connections with various networks, cloud providers, and carriers through Digital Realty’s existing facilities. Assured Communications is providing critical support for the design, engineering, and construction phases of this project. The CLS is currently under development and is anticipated to become operational and begin supporting cables by 2028.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for strengthening global connectivity, particularly between the Asia Pacific region and North America. By integrating subsea landing infrastructure with its established interconnection and data center platform, Digital Realty is creating a more seamless and scalable environment for intercontinental data exchange. The new CLS will provide increased capacity and improved resilience for data transmission, which is vital for enterprises, cloud service providers, and telecommunications companies that rely on robust global networks. This expansion addresses the growing demand for high-speed, reliable data pathways, supporting advancements in areas like artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The enhanced connectivity will benefit businesses requiring low-latency access to international markets and digital services, potentially fostering economic growth and innovation in the region.
What's Next?
The subsea cable landing station is currently in its development phase, with an expected operational date in 2028. Once operational, it will serve as a critical hub for subsea cables terminating in Los Angeles, significantly expanding connectivity routes between Asia Pacific and North America. Digital Realty and Assured Communications will continue their collaboration through the construction and implementation phases. The project's completion will likely attract more international data traffic and potentially lead to further investments in digital infrastructure in the Los Angeles area. Stakeholders, including telecommunications companies, cloud providers, and large enterprises, will be closely watching the progress, as the new CLS promises to offer enhanced connectivity options and improved network performance for their operations.
Beyond the Headlines
The establishment of this new subsea cable landing station underscores the increasing strategic importance of coastal cities like Los Angeles as critical gateways for global data flow. This infrastructure is not merely about physical cables; it represents a foundational element for the digital economy, impacting everything from international trade and communication to the proliferation of advanced technologies. The project highlights a broader trend of data center providers expanding their capabilities to manage the entire data lifecycle, from subsea landing to terrestrial distribution. This integrated approach is essential for addressing the challenges of 'Data Gravity,' where the mass of data attracts applications and services, necessitating robust and interconnected infrastructure. The long-term implications include potentially shifting geopolitical dynamics related to data control and sovereignty, as well as fostering a more interconnected and interdependent global digital landscape.
