What's Happening?
Steerprop, a Finnish marine propulsion company, has received a repeat order from Turkish shipyard Med Marine for two SP 175 T propulsors. These will be installed on the third vessel in a series of Rascal 2100-Z harbor tugs designed by Robert Allan Ltd.
The propulsors are designed to adapt to various configurations, including mechanical, hybrid, or electric prime movers, and are optimized for maximum bollard pull. Each unit will feature 1.80m propellers with nozzles, delivering 1,080 kW of thrust, resulting in a total bollard pull of 35 tons. The order includes wheelhouse controls and is scheduled for delivery in February 2027.
Why It's Important?
This order underscores Steerprop's growing influence in the tugboat market, particularly with its T-series propulsors that offer flexibility and efficiency. The collaboration between Steerprop, Med Marine, and Robert Allan Ltd. highlights the importance of innovation and customization in marine engineering to meet specific operational needs. The successful deployment of these propulsors can enhance the performance and reliability of harbor tugs, which are critical for port operations and maritime logistics. This development also reflects the broader trend towards more efficient and adaptable marine propulsion systems.
