What's Happening?
Hawaiian Bros Island Grill, known for its Hawaiian plate lunches, has signed a lease for its first brick-and-mortar location in Georgia, slated to open in early 2027. The new restaurant will be situated at 112 Courtland St NE, adjacent to Georgia State
University, within the One12 Courtland mixed-use development. This move marks a significant step in the brand's Southeast expansion strategy. The location will be owned and operated by MRCO, a multi-unit franchise group with extensive experience in the restaurant industry, which is also leading Hawaiian Bros' growth across North Carolina, West Central Georgia, and North Alabama. The restaurant aims to provide a convenient dining option for students and downtown workers, offering dine-in, delivery, and pick-up services with a menu featuring chicken and pork glazed with various sauces, macaroni salad, white rice, vegetables, and Dole Soft Serve®.
Why It's Important?
The entry of Hawaiian Bros into the Georgia market, particularly in a high-traffic area near Georgia State University, signifies a growing trend of fast-casual dining expansion into urban and collegiate environments. This development is important for the local economy, as it creates new job opportunities in the restaurant sector and contributes to the vibrancy of the downtown Atlanta area. For consumers, it introduces a new culinary option, potentially diversifying the local food scene. For Hawaiian Bros, this brick-and-mortar location, complementing its existing ghost kitchen in Decatur, represents a strategic move to increase brand visibility and market share in the Southeast. The partnership with an experienced franchise group like MRCO also highlights the appeal of the Hawaiian Bros model to established operators looking to expand their portfolios, indicating confidence in the brand's growth potential and operational efficiency.
What's Next?
The focus for Hawaiian Bros and MRCO will be on the successful launch of the new Atlanta location in early 2027. This will involve construction, hiring, and training staff, as well as marketing efforts to build anticipation and attract customers. The performance of this flagship Georgia restaurant will likely influence future expansion plans within the state and the broader Southeast region. MRCO's existing development agreement includes plans for 10 more restaurants in contiguous markets like Birmingham, AL, Columbus and Macon, GA, and Auburn, AL, indicating a sustained growth trajectory. The brand will also continue to attract seasoned multi-unit operators for further franchise development across its target states, aiming to capitalize on its unique concept and strong performance in the fast-casual segment.
Beyond the Headlines
The expansion of Hawaiian Bros into Georgia reflects broader shifts in the food service industry, particularly the increasing demand for diverse, fast-casual dining experiences that offer both convenience and quality. The strategic placement near a university campus underscores the importance of targeting younger demographics and urban populations who often seek quick, accessible, and culturally varied food options. This move also highlights the evolving landscape of franchise development, where experienced multi-unit operators play a crucial role in scaling brands across new territories. Furthermore, the success of such ventures can influence urban planning and commercial real estate development, as businesses seek prime locations that align with demographic trends and consumer behavior. The brand's emphasis on 'Aloha Spirit' also suggests an attempt to offer more than just food, aiming to create a distinct cultural experience that resonates with customers.
