What's Happening?
Three Spanish entrepreneurs, Iván Royo, José Luis Gonzálvez, and Antonio Calero, have introduced an innovative platform named 'MPattern' that aims to transform the fashion industry by automating the process of pattern drafting and fitting using artificial
intelligence (AI). Developed under Midnata Labs, the platform is designed to democratize access to advanced pattern-making tools, traditionally reserved for large companies, by making them available to small workshops, students, and emerging brands. MPattern allows users to create a measurement profile, select from over 50 professional patterns, and personalize these patterns with specific measurements. The platform generates the pattern in real-time, which can be printed or exported to design software. It is available in 52 languages and aims to reduce the time required for pattern creation from hours to minutes.
Why It's Important?
The launch of MPattern is significant as it addresses a major barrier in the fashion industry: the time-consuming and costly process of pattern making. By automating this process, the platform enables smaller fashion entities to compete on a global scale without sacrificing the craftsmanship involved in fashion design. This democratization of technology could lead to increased innovation and diversity in fashion, as more designers and small businesses gain access to tools that enhance efficiency and creativity. The platform's accessibility in multiple languages and its compliance with European data protection regulations further emphasize its potential to impact the global fashion industry positively.
What's Next?
The platform is currently accessible via its official website, with plans to launch a mobile app soon. As MPattern gains traction, it is likely to attract a diverse user base, from individual designers to small ateliers worldwide. The founders aim to continue enhancing the platform's capabilities, potentially integrating more advanced features and expanding its reach. The fashion industry may see a shift towards more personalized and efficient production processes, driven by the adoption of AI technologies like MPattern.
Beyond the Headlines
The introduction of AI in pattern making raises questions about the future role of traditional pattern makers and designers. While MPattern emphasizes that it does not intend to replace these professionals, the shift towards automation could lead to changes in job roles and skill requirements within the industry. Additionally, the platform's ability to streamline production processes may contribute to more sustainable fashion practices by reducing resource consumption and waste.
