What's Happening?
The Vermont Chamber of Commerce and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing (VDTM) have initiated the application process for the 2027/28 Vermont Signature Events program. This annual program aims to identify and recognize events that distinctly
represent Vermont's character, attract visitors, and contribute significantly to the state's tourism economy. In 2024, Vermont's tourism sector saw an estimated 16 million visitors, generating a record $4.2 billion across various sectors including lodging, food, retail, arts, entertainment, and recreation. Events seeking this designation must occur between April 1, 2027, and March 31, 2028, and applications are due by October 1, 2026. The designation is not automatically renewed, requiring previously selected events to reapply for consideration.
Why It's Important?
This program is crucial for Vermont's economy, particularly its robust tourism sector. By highlighting unique events, the state aims to sustain and grow its visitor numbers, which directly translates into economic benefits for local businesses and communities. The substantial revenue generated by tourism, as evidenced by the $4.2 billion spent in 2024, underscores its importance to Vermont's financial health. The program provides selected events with widespread recognition through features in the Vermont Inspiration Guide, the VermontVacation Events Calendar, VDTM's webpage, consumer newsletters, and social media. This exposure can significantly increase attendance, benefiting event organizers and the broader local economy through increased spending on accommodations, dining, and other services. It also helps maintain Vermont's brand as a distinctive tourist destination.
What's Next?
Prospective event organizers in Vermont are encouraged to submit their applications for the 2027/28 Vermont Signature Events program by the deadline of October 1, 2026. Following the application period, a new group of events will be selected to receive the 'Vermont Signature Event' designation. These chosen events will then be featured in various promotional materials and platforms by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce and VDTM, leading up to and during their scheduled dates between April 1, 2027, and March 31, 2028. The success of these events will be monitored for their contribution to visitor numbers and economic impact, influencing future program iterations and state tourism strategies.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate economic impact, the Vermont Signature Events program plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the cultural and natural heritage of Vermont. By emphasizing events that showcase the state's 'distinctive character,' the program encourages the development and celebration of local traditions, arts, and unique community offerings. This focus helps differentiate Vermont in a competitive tourism market, attracting visitors who seek authentic experiences rather than generic attractions. The program also fosters community engagement and pride, as local events gain statewide and regional recognition, potentially leading to increased volunteerism and local investment in cultural initiatives. This long-term cultural preservation and community building are less tangible but equally significant benefits of the program.
