What's Happening?
Schlage is set to release its first smart lock supporting ultra wideband (UWB) technology, the Schlage Sense Pro deadbolt, on June 29th in the U.S. Priced at $399, this lock allows users to unlock doors by simply approaching them with a compatible device,
eliminating the need for keys or biometric scans. The Sense Pro, first announced at CES 2025, utilizes Schlage's proprietary Converge technology for UWB, requiring a home key on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. It also supports Matter over Thread, enabling pairing with Thread-enabled Apple Home hubs for consistent performance. Additionally, the lock is compatible with Aliro, supporting UWB hands-free unlocking and NFC tap-to-unlock, with plans to support digital keys in Samsung and Google Wallets later this year.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of UWB technology in smart locks like the Schlage Sense Pro represents a significant advancement in home security and convenience. By allowing hands-free unlocking, it enhances user experience and accessibility, particularly for those with mobility challenges. The integration with major tech ecosystems like Apple and upcoming support for Samsung and Google Wallets indicates a move towards more interconnected smart home environments. This development could drive further innovation in the smart home industry, encouraging other manufacturers to adopt similar technologies, thereby expanding the market for smart home devices.
What's Next?
As the Schlage Sense Pro becomes available, consumer feedback will likely influence future iterations and enhancements. The anticipated support for Samsung and Google Wallets later this year suggests ongoing updates and potential expansions in compatibility. The success of this product could prompt competitors to accelerate their own UWB-enabled offerings, potentially leading to a broader adoption of UWB technology in various smart home applications. Additionally, as more devices become interconnected, issues related to cybersecurity and privacy will need to be addressed to ensure consumer trust.
