What's Happening?
American Airlines has successfully used electrosynthetic aviation fuel (eSAF) for the first time on a commercial passenger flight between Corpus Christi and Dallas/Fort Worth. This marks a significant step in demonstrating that eSAF, derived from CO₂
and renewable electricity, can be integrated into existing airport infrastructure without modifications to aircraft or fueling systems. The fuel was produced by Infinium at their Pathfinder facility in Corpus Christi, which has been operational since 2023. The eSAF was blended with conventional Jet A fuel and stored in shared airport tanks before being used on the flight. This initiative highlights the potential for eSAF to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels, contingent on the renewable sources of electricity and CO₂ used in its production.
