What's Happening?
TEDCO, Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, has announced its acceptance of the Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program Grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). This grant will enable TEDCO to expand its existing
Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Proposal Lab. The expanded Proposal Lab will offer workshops, proposal reviews, and one-on-one guidance to approximately 20 Maryland companies, with a focus on first-time applicants, early-stage companies, and businesses in communities historically underrepresented in federal research and development programs. Additionally, a new Commercialization Assistance track will provide workshops and mentoring to 10 to 15 Phase I and II awardees, guiding them through customer discovery, market validation, partnerships, and investor presentations.
Why It's Important?
This grant is crucial for strengthening Maryland's technology ecosystem and fostering innovation. By expanding the SBIR/STTR Proposal Lab and introducing a Commercialization Assistance track, TEDCO will empower more Maryland entrepreneurs to compete for federal research funding and successfully bring their technologies to market. This initiative is particularly significant for early-stage companies and those in underserved communities, as it provides them with essential resources and expertise that might otherwise be inaccessible. According to TEDCO CEO Troy LeMaile-Stovall, TEDCO's efforts have already generated an estimated $9.9 billion in economic activity and supported over 38,000 jobs in Maryland, underscoring the value of helping promising technologies move from research to commercialization. The program's focus on commercialization strategies will help bridge the gap between scientific discovery and economic impact, driving job creation and economic growth within the state.
What's Next?
With the FAST Partnership Program Grant, TEDCO will immediately begin implementing the expanded SBIR/STTR Proposal Lab and the new Commercialization Assistance track. The Proposal Lab will conduct workshops and provide individualized coaching to help approximately 20 Maryland companies prepare competitive federal funding proposals. The Commercialization Assistance track will offer workshops and mentoring to 10 to 15 Phase I and II awardees, focusing on critical aspects of market entry and growth. TEDCO will collaborate with the Maryland Small Business Development Center, the University of Maryland I-Corps Program, and OST Global Solutions to deliver these initiatives. These collaborations will ensure that participants receive comprehensive support in business advising, commercialization, and federal proposal development. The program aims to continue its track record of success, building on past achievements where TEDCO's FAST-supported Proposal Lab assisted over 190 Maryland small businesses in securing more than $33 million through federal awards.
Beyond the Headlines
The acceptance of this grant by TEDCO has deeper implications for fostering a more inclusive and robust innovation economy in Maryland. By prioritizing first-time applicants and businesses from communities with historically lower participation in federal research and development programs, TEDCO is actively working to democratize access to critical funding and resources. This approach not only promotes economic equity but also taps into a broader pool of talent and innovative ideas that might otherwise remain undeveloped. The long-term impact could include a more diverse landscape of technology companies, increased competitiveness for Maryland in national and international markets, and the creation of high-quality jobs across various demographics. This initiative underscores the role of government-backed programs in nurturing a dynamic and equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem.
