What's Happening?
Hampton Lumber, an Oregon-based manufacturer of sustainable building materials, has announced its selection of Allendale County, South Carolina, for its inaugural East Coast sawmill operation. This significant investment, totaling $225 million, is projected
to generate at least 125 new jobs in the region. The company plans to construct a 375,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art timber plant at the intersection of Highway 321 and Barker Mill Pond Road in Fairfax. This new facility will specialize in producing high-quality southern yellow pine lumber for structural applications. Hampton Lumber, a fourth-generation family business, currently operates nine sawmills across Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada, distributing building materials globally. Operations at the new South Carolina plant are anticipated to commence by 2027. The project has received support from the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Coordinating Council, which approved job development credits.
Why It's Important?
This investment by Hampton Lumber is crucial for the economic development of Allendale County, a predominantly rural and agricultural area in South Carolina. The creation of at least 125 new jobs will provide significant employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy. Governor Henry McMaster highlighted that the new plant will be a substantial addition to the state's forestry sector, offering opportunities for its population and boosting the local economy. The project underscores the growing strength and potential of rural communities in South Carolina, as noted by Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III. Furthermore, the decision reflects confidence in South Carolina's sustainably managed forests and skilled workforce, according to State Forester Scott Phillips, providing a positive boost for the forestry industry and the communities reliant on it for economic opportunities.
What's Next?
Hampton Lumber expects operations at the new Allendale County facility to be fully underway by 2027. The company will likely begin recruitment efforts for the 125 new positions in the coming years, with interested individuals directed to Hampton Lumber's career page for employment opportunities. The South Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Coordinating Council will continue to support the project, having already approved job development credits. Local officials, such as Allendale County Council Chairman Bill Robinson, anticipate ongoing collaboration with Hampton Lumber to ensure the long-term success of the plant and its positive impact on the community. The establishment of this sawmill is expected to attract further investment and development in the region's forest products sector.
Beyond the Headlines
The establishment of Hampton Lumber's East Coast operation in South Carolina signifies a broader trend of industrial expansion into the southeastern United States, driven by factors such as available natural resources, supportive state policies, and a ready workforce. This move could encourage other timber and manufacturing companies to consider similar investments in the region, further solidifying the Southeast's role as a hub for sustainable forestry and wood products. The focus on high-quality southern yellow pine for structures also reflects ongoing demand in the construction sector. The project's emphasis on sustainability, as highlighted by Hampton Lumber's commitment to sustainably managed forest resources, aligns with increasing environmental consciousness in industry and consumer markets, potentially setting a precedent for future industrial developments in the state.
