What's Happening?
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced that its Hotel Sustainability Basics program will transition to an independent third-party certification scheme. This move aligns with the European Union's new requirements for environmental claims
and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Accreditation Framework. Since its inception in 2022, the program has been adopted by over 8,000 hotels across 85 countries. The framework outlines 12 practical actions for sustainability, including energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, and support for local communities. The transition aims to provide independent verification and greater transparency, offering hotels a credible pathway to demonstrate sustainability performance in line with evolving regulatory and market expectations.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it strengthens the credibility and transparency of sustainability claims within the hospitality industry. By aligning with EU directives and the GSTC framework, the program enhances trust among travelers, businesses, governments, and investors. The independent certification provides a robust assurance of sustainability practices, which is increasingly important as consumers and stakeholders demand more accountability in environmental claims. This move also highlights the hospitality sector's commitment to sustainable practices, potentially influencing other industries to adopt similar frameworks.
What's Next?
Hotels currently participating in the program are not required to take immediate action, as WTTC and its partners will guide them through the transition. Later this year, WTTC plans to introduce 'Basics Plus,' a further step in the sustainability journey, developed with the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. This will offer hotels a roadmap from essential practices to independently verified performance, forming part of the WSHA's Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality. The initiative is expected to continue gaining support from industry stakeholders, further driving sustainability progress.
