What's Happening?
InfraRed Capital Partners, a global infrastructure asset manager based in London, has acquired a majority stake in Rail Modal Group (RMG), an intermodal logistics services provider based in Albany, New York. RMG operates a network of privately operated
intermodal terminals that provide services to inland containerized export shippers. The acquisition aims to enhance RMG's growth by expanding its capacity and service capabilities. RMG partners with freight railroads and ocean carriers to deliver integrated containerized export solutions, facilitating efficient transportation from producers to ports. The company has shipped over 1,200 unit trains since its founding in 2018, equivalent to approximately 200 million truck miles.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition represents a significant investment in the U.S. logistics and transportation infrastructure, highlighting the growing importance of intermodal solutions in the supply chain. By expanding RMG's capabilities, InfraRed Capital Partners aims to improve access to global markets for U.S. producers and processors, particularly those located far from marine ports. The investment supports the U.S. supply chain by filling empty freight capacity and enhancing the efficiency of containerized exports. This move aligns with broader trends in the logistics industry, where intermodal solutions are increasingly favored for their cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits.
What's Next?
RMG plans to focus on continued investment in growth, with an emphasis on expanding capacity and resilience at its existing terminals. The company aims to broaden its service capabilities and develop additional locations to better serve its customers and transportation partners. InfraRed Capital Partners will support RMG with capital, infrastructure expertise, and operational resources to realize its long-term potential. The acquisition is expected to strengthen RMG's position in the North American supply chain and enhance its ability to meet the growing demand for intermodal logistics solutions.
