What's Happening?
Sports streaming service DAZN has acquired EverPass Media, a move designed to significantly accelerate DAZN's expansion within the U.S. market. EverPass Media specializes in holding commercial rights to major U.S. sports events, which it then markets
to public venues such as bars, restaurants, and hotels. This acquisition marks the full global launch of 'DAZN for Business,' a dedicated media platform aimed at serving commercial venues worldwide. EverPass currently holds exclusive U.S. commercial distribution rights for events including the NFL Sunday Ticket (out-of-market regular-season games), English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, MLB, NBA, WNBA, NWSL, NASCAR, PGA TOUR, MLS, Formula 1, and college football and basketball. Additionally, EverPass provides access to live sports content available on platforms like Peacock, Netflix, Paramount, and Apple. EverPass, founded in 2023 by 32 Equity and RedBird Capital Partners, will see RedBird Capital Partners, 32 Equity, and TKO Group Holdings become minority shareholders in DAZN as part of the deal.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is a pivotal development for DAZN's strategy in the highly competitive U.S. sports media landscape. By integrating EverPass Media, DAZN gains immediate access to a robust commercial distribution platform and established relationships with numerous U.S. venues. This allows DAZN to cater to a broader audience beyond individual subscribers, tapping into the lucrative market of public viewing experiences. The inclusion of major sports rights, particularly the NFL Sunday Ticket, significantly enhances DAZN's offering and competitive edge against other sports broadcasters and streamers. For U.S. sports fans, this could mean more widespread availability of premium sports content in public settings. For the sports industry, it signifies a continued shift towards diversified distribution models and the increasing importance of commercial venue rights in maximizing viewership and revenue.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, EverPass Media will formally rebrand to DAZN for Business, with Alex Kaplan, CEO of EverPass, continuing to lead the business and taking on an expanded role within DAZN. The immediate next steps will involve integrating EverPass's technology and existing commercial venue relationships into DAZN's global operations. This will likely lead to an expanded offering of sports content for U.S. commercial venues under the DAZN for Business umbrella. The deal also positions DAZN to further explore opportunities in the U.S. market, potentially leading to more exclusive content acquisitions or partnerships. Competitors in the sports streaming and broadcasting space will be closely watching DAZN's moves, as this acquisition could trigger further consolidation or strategic alliances within the industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The DAZN-EverPass Media deal highlights a broader trend in the sports media industry: the increasing fragmentation of content rights and the strategic importance of both direct-to-consumer and commercial distribution. As more sports content moves to streaming platforms, the ability to reach audiences in public venues becomes a critical differentiator. This acquisition also underscores the growing influence of private equity firms like RedBird Capital Partners in shaping the sports media landscape. The deal could lead to a more integrated and seamless experience for commercial venues, potentially driving higher engagement and revenue for sports leagues and content owners. Furthermore, it reflects the evolving consumption habits of sports fans, who increasingly seek flexible viewing options, whether at home or in social settings.
