What's Happening?
Savannah Resources has announced that its Barroso Project in Portugal is set to become a significant European producer of spodumene concentrate, a key component in lithium-ion batteries. The announcement follows the release of the phase one Definitive
Feasibility Study (DFS), which outlines a 14-year mine life with the production of 2.56 million tonnes of spodumene concentrate. This output is sufficient to supply lithium for over 7 million electric vehicle batteries. The project is expected to generate $3.2 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and has a free cash flow of $1.9 billion. The project will also contribute to local infrastructure, including a $61 million investment in a new national road.
Why It's Important?
The Barroso Project positions Savannah Resources as a key player in Europe's battery value chain, crucial for the continent's transition to electric vehicles. With Europe heavily reliant on lithium imports, the project could reduce dependency and support the EU's goal of increasing local lithium production. The economic benefits extend beyond the company, promising significant socio-economic advantages for the region, including job creation and infrastructure development. This development aligns with global trends of increasing demand for lithium, driven by the growth of electric vehicles and renewable energy storage solutions.
What's Next?
Savannah Resources plans to move into the next phase of development, focusing on project finance and compliance with Portuguese State Grant obligations. The company aims to begin construction in 2027, supported by a €110 million grant. The project will also involve commercial offtake discussions and front-end engineering design. As global demand for lithium and other raw materials continues to rise, the Barroso Project is well-positioned to meet future needs.
