What's Happening?
The Target Huron Economic Development Corporation has introduced the RISE Initiative, a $100,000 program aimed at preparing high school juniors and seniors in Northeast Michigan for successful careers and entrepreneurship. The initiative, which stands
for Readiness, Integration, Skill Development, and Employment, is designed to connect students with real-world skills and industry-recognized credentials before graduation. It will serve students across Alcona, Alpena, Cheboygan, Iosco, and Presque Isle counties. The program addresses the region's challenge of developing and retaining a skilled workforce by creating pathways to meaningful employment opportunities. The initiative also supports small business development by providing a skilled workforce, which is crucial for business growth.
Why It's Important?
The RISE Initiative is significant as it addresses the critical issue of workforce development in Northeast Michigan, a region where small businesses are a key economic driver. By equipping students with necessary skills and credentials, the program aims to reduce the gap between education and employment, thereby enhancing the local economy. Small businesses, which often struggle with workforce availability, stand to benefit from a pipeline of skilled workers, potentially reducing onboarding costs and increasing productivity. The initiative also fosters entrepreneurship, encouraging students to explore business ownership and innovation, which could lead to new business ventures and economic growth in the region.
What's Next?
Target Huron will oversee the implementation of the RISE Initiative, working with school districts and community partners to ensure its success. The program's performance will be evaluated based on enrollment, certifications earned, and employment outcomes. As the initiative progresses, it is expected to reach over 2,400 students, providing them with skills that align with employer needs. The long-term impact of the program will be monitored to ensure it continues to meet the workforce demands of local businesses and supports the region's economic development goals.
