What's Happening?
More than four decades after its formation, the progressive rock supergroup ASIA is set to release a new studio album titled 'Indigo' in 2026. The album will feature a new lineup comprising Geoffrey Downes, Virgil Donati, John Mitchell, and Harry Whitley.
'Indigo' aims to bridge the band's past, present, and future, incorporating some of the final compositions by the late John Wetton, including 'Tattoo Indigo (Parts 2 & 3)' and 'Chesapeake Bay.' The album's genesis began in 2015 with initial writing by Downes and Wetton, but was put on hold due to Wetton's illness and subsequent passing. Following a tribute concert for John Wetton in 2023, Downes was encouraged to re-establish the band and complete the album. The recording took place throughout 2025, with Downes and the band producing, and John Mitchell handling mixing and mastering. Special guest appearances include Steve Howe on acoustic guitar for 'Chesapeake Bay' and Mike Portnoy on the bonus track 'Tattoo Indigo (Part 3).'
Why It's Important?
The release of 'Indigo' is significant for the progressive rock genre and ASIA's dedicated fanbase, particularly in the U.S. It marks a continuation of the band's legacy while introducing new talent, potentially attracting a new generation of listeners. The inclusion of John Wetton's final compositions provides a poignant tribute to his enduring influence and ensures a sense of continuity with the band's original sound. For the U.S. music industry, this album represents the enduring appeal of classic rock acts and their ability to evolve while honoring their roots. The album's success could also influence touring schedules, potentially bringing ASIA to U.S. venues, which would be a notable event for fans. The collaboration with musicians like Steve Howe and Mike Portnoy further elevates the album's profile, drawing interest from fans of other prominent progressive rock bands.
What's Next?
Following the release of 'Indigo' in 2026, ASIA is expected to embark on further live activities, building on their recent resurgence of tours across the U.S., Japan, and Europe. The album's reception will likely dictate the scale and scope of these future tours. Fans can anticipate potential tour announcements and promotional events surrounding the album's launch. The band's new lineup will have the opportunity to establish its dynamic on stage, performing both new material from 'Indigo' and classic ASIA hits. The album's success could also lead to further studio recordings from this iteration of ASIA, solidifying their place in the contemporary progressive rock scene. The continued collaboration with Frontiers, their long-time supportive label, suggests a stable platform for future projects.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of 'Indigo' after the passing of a founding member like John Wetton highlights the complex emotional and creative processes involved in continuing a band's legacy. It delves into themes of tribute, evolution, and the enduring power of music to connect past and present. Ethically, the band navigates the delicate balance of honoring Wetton's contributions while forging a new identity with fresh talent. The album's ability to evoke Wetton's vocal style through Harry Whitley's performance raises interesting questions about musical homage and the preservation of a band's signature sound. Culturally, ASIA's continued relevance underscores the timeless appeal of progressive rock, a genre known for its intricate musicianship and lyrical depth, which continues to resonate with audiences globally, including in the U.S. This release is not just an album; it's a statement about resilience and artistic continuity in the face of change.
