What's Happening?
Eli Lilly has launched its LillyDirect sales channel in the UK, expanding its direct-to-patient (DTP) model that has been successful in the U.S. for weight-loss therapies. In the UK, LillyDirect will operate as a post-prescription dispensing and delivery
service through private healthcare organizations. The first product available through this channel is Mounjaro, an injectable drug for weight loss and type 2 diabetes. This service aims to ensure patients receive authentic medications, reducing the risk of counterfeit drugs. Lilly plans to potentially expand the service to include other medications in the future.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of LillyDirect to the UK represents a significant shift in how pharmaceutical companies can deliver medications directly to patients, bypassing traditional supply chains. This model could improve access to medications that are difficult to obtain through public healthcare systems, like the NHS, due to eligibility restrictions. By ensuring the delivery of authentic drugs, LillyDirect also addresses concerns about counterfeit medications, enhancing patient safety. This move could set a precedent for other pharmaceutical companies to adopt similar models, potentially transforming the pharmaceutical supply chain and improving patient access to necessary treatments.
