Soroosh Riazi Isfahani, a designer from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, has developed a project called SLICE, which repurposes used tennis balls into footwear. This innovative approach involves cutting the tennis balls into sections
and incorporating them into shoe designs, preserving the original materials' integrity. The project addresses the environmental issue of tennis balls ending up in landfills, where they can take up to 400 years to decompose. With approximately 400 million tennis balls produced annually and only 1% being recycled, this initiative offers a sustainable alternative by utilizing the balls' existing properties, such as durability and grip, in a new context. The SLICE project is currently entered into the James Dyson Award 2026, highlighting its potential impact on sustainable design practices.
