Cheyenne's Gunslingers, a volunteer, nonprofit troupe, are continuing their over 40-year tradition of performing free Old West gunfight reenactments, comedies, and melodramas in downtown Cheyenne. The troupe performs almost daily during June and July,
with twice-daily shows during Cheyenne Frontier Days. Established in 1983 by local businessmen, the Gunslingers' original mission was to entertain visitors and encourage them to stay in the downtown area for lunch and dinner, rather than immediately leaving for the fairgrounds. In 2009, the troupe relocated to Gunslinger Square, which shifted their audience demographic from adults leaving bars to larger crowds of families and children, prompting a change in scripts to be more family-friendly. The Gunslingers are supported by local businesses and sell merchandise like bullet necklaces and belt buckles to fund their performances.
