What's Happening?
Savannah Resources has announced that its Barroso Project in Portugal is poised to become a major European producer of spodumene concentrate, a key component in lithium-ion batteries. The project, which has a 14-year mine life, is expected to produce 2.56
million tonnes of spodumene concentrate, enough for over 7 million electric vehicle batteries. The project is projected to generate significant economic returns, with an estimated US$3.2 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA).
Why It's Important?
The Barroso Project is crucial for Europe's battery value chain, as the continent seeks to reduce its reliance on lithium imports. With the growing demand for electric vehicles, securing a local supply of lithium is vital for Europe's energy transition and sustainability goals. The project also promises socio-economic benefits for the region, including job creation and infrastructure development. For Savannah Resources, the project positions the company as a key player in the European lithium market.
What's Next?
Savannah Resources plans to move forward with the next phase of development, including project finance and compliance with Portuguese state grant obligations. The company aims to begin construction in 2027, supported by a €110 million grant. As the project progresses, Savannah will engage in commercial offtake discussions and prepare for long-lead item ordering. The successful development of the Barroso Project could encourage further investment in Europe's lithium sector.
