What's Happening?
Aspen Hospitality has announced the expansion of its luxury hotel brand, Nell Hotels, with the introduction of The Nell New York, set to open in fall 2027. This new boutique hotel will be located in the heart of midtown Manhattan at Rockefeller Center,
marking it as the first and only hotel within this iconic location. The Nell New York will be a Relais & Châteaux property, offering 134 rooms and transforming former office space into a luxurious guest retreat. The hotel will feature amenities such as an all-day dining venue, a lobby bar, a spa, and a wine lounge. The design, led by the Rockwell Group, will draw inspiration from the Art Deco grandeur of Rockefeller Center. This expansion is part of a strategic growth plan by Aspen Hospitality, a division of Aspen One, owned by the Chicago-based Crown family.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of The Nell New York signifies a significant expansion of the luxury hospitality market in New York City, particularly within the prestigious Rockefeller Center. This development is poised to attract affluent travelers seeking exclusive and high-end accommodations, potentially boosting tourism and local business in the area. The hotel's unique position as the only Relais & Châteaux property in New York City enhances its appeal to luxury travelers. Additionally, the project reflects a broader trend in the hospitality industry where brands are focusing on creating unique, experiential stays that offer more than just accommodation, but also access to cultural and social experiences. This could set a precedent for future developments in urban luxury hospitality.
What's Next?
As The Nell New York prepares for its debut, Aspen Hospitality will focus on completing the construction and ensuring the hotel meets the high standards associated with The Little Nell brand. The Little Nell in Aspen will temporarily close in April 2027 for renovations, aiming to reopen for the 2027-2028 winter season. The success of The Nell New York could influence further expansions of the Nell Hotels brand, potentially leading to new properties in other major cities. Stakeholders, including the Crown family and Tishman Speyer, will likely monitor the hotel's performance closely to assess its impact on the Rockefeller Center and the broader hospitality market.
