A new study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, led by Sindre Midttun of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, suggests that high-intensity exercise is more effective than moderate intensity in preserving aerobic fitness
(VO2 max) in adults aged 70 and above. The research reanalyzed data from the Generation 100 study, which initially involved 1,500 participants in Trondheim, Norway. Instead of focusing on randomized groups, the reanalysis examined what participants actually did, selecting 500 individuals who consistently engaged in either moderate or high-intensity exercise over a five-year period. While all participants experienced a decline in fitness, those in the high-intensity training (HIT) group lost significantly less VO2 max compared to the moderate-intensity training (MIT) group. Specifically, after five years, the HIT group was 3.1% lower than baseline, while the MIT group was 7.7% lower. Women in the HIT group showed even more remarkable results, with no net loss of fitness after five years, compared to a 4.6% decline in the MIT group.
