What's Happening?
The Columbus Blue Jackets are expanding their Power Play Challenge, a free, hockey-themed wellness curriculum, to more elementary schools. This initiative, presented by OhioHealth and Greif, aims to combat childhood obesity by integrating hockey into
physical education programs. Since its inception in 2017, the program has grown from 20 to 186 schools, engaging over 55,900 students in grades 2 through 5 across Central Ohio. The curriculum includes activities like jogging, fitness, agility, street hockey, and nutrition, with students earning rewards such as Blue Jackets game tickets and hockey equipment. The program is designed to meet Ohio state standards and provides necessary equipment to participating schools.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the Power Play Challenge is significant as it promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles among young students, addressing the growing concern of childhood obesity. By introducing hockey, a sport less familiar to many students, the program levels the playing field and encourages participation from all skill levels. This initiative not only fosters a love for hockey but also instills lifelong healthy habits. The involvement of a professional sports team like the Blue Jackets adds credibility and excitement, potentially increasing student engagement and interest in physical education.
What's Next?
As the program opens to more schools, it is expected to further increase participation and impact. Schools interested in joining can apply to become educational partners, allowing more students to benefit from the curriculum. The Blue Jackets will continue to support the program by providing workshops for teachers and necessary equipment. The success of this initiative could inspire similar programs in other regions, leveraging sports to promote health and wellness in schools.
