Digital Realty, a global data center solutions provider, is collaborating with NVIDIA and Emerald AI to establish the world's first power-flexible AI factory in Virginia. This initiative, set to launch later this year, will operate at nearly 100 megawatts
and is designed to demonstrate that data centers can function as precise, controllable loads on the power grid. Unlike traditional data centers that draw constant power, this facility aims to prove that AI infrastructure can adapt its energy consumption to support grid stability. This development is part of a broader effort to integrate AI data centers more effectively into existing power grids, addressing concerns about the strain on energy resources caused by the increasing demand for AI. Federal and state regulators are already exploring flexible data centers as a solution, with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission directing regional grid operators to accommodate large customers willing to limit their power draw. Texas's grid operator is finalizing similar rules, and Silicon Valley Power has launched a flexible-load interconnection program, indicating a growing trend towards integrating such solutions.
