What's Happening?
USA Rare Earth, Inc. has entered into definitive agreements to acquire strategic minority stakes in Carester SAS, a French leader in rare earth processing and separation. This investment aims to strengthen USA Rare Earth's midstream rare earth platform
in Europe and support the integrated industrial ecosystem forming in Lacq, France. Carester is developing a facility for magnet recycling and heavy rare earth separation, expected to commence operations in late 2026. The facility will produce significant quantities of neodymium-praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium oxides, representing a substantial portion of global production. This partnership allows USA Rare Earth to access Carester's engineering capabilities and intellectual property, while Carester gains access to USA Rare Earth's feedstock sources.
Why It's Important?
This strategic investment is crucial for USA Rare Earth as it enhances its position in the global rare earth market, particularly in Europe. The partnership with Carester provides USA Rare Earth with advanced processing capabilities and a competitive advantage in the separation of heavy rare earths, which are critical for various high-tech applications. The investment aligns with the growing demand for secure critical materials, driven by the need for sustainable and long-term value creation. By establishing a secure, Western-aligned supply chain, USA Rare Earth is positioned to support industries such as defense, electrification, and advanced manufacturing, reducing reliance on Chinese rare earth supplies.
What's Next?
The investment is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions. USA Rare Earth and Carester will continue to develop their integrated rare earth industrial platform in Lacq, France, with plans for further expansion in processing, separation, and potentially magnet manufacturing. The partnership aims to create one of Europe's most complete rare earth industrial ecosystems, supported by the French government's financial incentives. USA Rare Earth's ongoing development of a metal and alloy production facility in Lacq will further enhance its capabilities and market presence.
