What's Happening?
Juventus Football Club has announced the second cohort of its 'Juventus Forward' open innovation program. This initiative pairs emerging companies with operational challenges across the club, aiming to modernize various aspects of its operations. The
2026-27 Forward Squad, presented at OGR Torino during the Wave conference, is divided into two main tracks: sports performance and corporate innovation. On the corporate side, seven companies will focus on stadium operations, media, and fan engagement. These include Zaro.ai for AI-driven media coverage tracking, WisyPlan for integrating facility documents and operating data into an AI platform, Talkalytics for AI voice surveys to gauge fan sentiment, Vivilo for personalized photo galleries at events, Kanoa Solutions for reducing water and energy consumption, and CrowdIQ for AI-powered crowd analysis to enhance stadium experience and identify commercial opportunities. SuperQuickQuestion, a Techstars Sports alum, will facilitate one-minute video calls between athletes and fans for promotions. The sports performance track involves four companies working with the sport science staff: Vokalo for wearable voice tech syncing on-field communication with match video, Vitelle for tracking health and hormonal factors in female athletes, NuHpro for personalized nutrition, and Forceteck for AI biomechanical analysis from smartphone video to improve performance and reduce injury risk. Giorgio Chiellini, Juventus Director of Football Strategy, noted the success of the first cohort in addressing daily operational problems.
Why It's Important?
This program is significant as it represents a strategic move by a major sports institution to embrace external innovation for operational efficiency and competitive advantage. For Juventus, it offers a cost-effective method to modernize various club functions, from fan engagement and stadium management to athlete performance and injury prevention, without the need to develop all solutions in-house. This approach allows the club to leverage cutting-edge technologies and specialized expertise from startups. For the participating startups, gaining access to a club of Juventus's stature provides a crucial proving ground and a valuable reference customer, which can significantly accelerate their growth and market validation. The integration of AI tools across media tracking, facility management, fan sentiment analysis, and biomechanical analysis highlights a broader trend in the sports industry towards data-driven decision-making and personalized experiences. This initiative could set a precedent for other sports organizations looking to innovate and stay competitive in an evolving technological landscape, potentially influencing how sports clubs globally approach technology adoption and partnership with the startup ecosystem.
What's Next?
The selected startups will now begin their pilot programs with Juventus, working directly with the club's operational teams and sport science staff. The success of these pilots will be closely monitored, with the potential for long-term partnerships or broader implementation of the solutions across the club's operations. The program's structure suggests ongoing evaluation and adaptation, with future cohorts likely to be selected based on emerging needs and technological advancements. The insights gained from these collaborations, particularly in areas like AI-driven fan engagement and athlete performance optimization, could be shared within the broader sports tech community, influencing industry best practices. Furthermore, the program's success could encourage other major sports clubs to adopt similar open innovation models, fostering a more dynamic and collaborative ecosystem between sports organizations and technology startups. The club's Director of Football Strategy, Giorgio Chiellini, and Innovation Manager Carolina Chiappero, along with Head of Sport Science and R&D Duccio Ferrari Bravo, will continue to oversee the program's progress and impact.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Juventus Forward' program extends beyond immediate operational improvements, touching upon deeper implications for the future of sports. By integrating advanced AI and wearable technologies, the club is not only enhancing performance but also redefining the athlete experience and fan interaction. The focus on personalized nutrition and female athlete health, for instance, reflects a growing awareness of individualized care in sports science. Ethically, the use of AI for crowd analysis and fan sentiment raises questions about data privacy and surveillance, which will need careful management. Culturally, this initiative signifies a shift from traditional, insular club operations to a more open, collaborative model that embraces external expertise. This could lead to a more interconnected sports industry where innovation is driven by a diverse range of players. The program also highlights the increasing importance of technology as a core component of competitive strategy in professional sports, moving beyond just on-field talent to encompass sophisticated off-field support systems and fan engagement strategies.
