What's Happening?
Blues Camp International, founded by Columbia College adjunct faculty member Fernando Jones, is a weeklong program designed to teach young musicians aged 12 to 18 about the blues. The camp, which runs from July 6 to July 10, focuses on building confidence,
teamwork, and an appreciation for blues music, a foundational American musical tradition. Participants begin each day with a 'Musicians Pledge' and engage in ensemble rehearsals, performances, and community activities. The camp, hosted annually since 2010, has established partnerships with various colleges across the country. This year, attendees include children from different regions, such as West Palm Beach, Florida, who have traveled to Chicago for the experience. The camp aims to provide a space for young musicians to develop both their musical and social skills.
Why It's Important?
The Blues Camp International serves as a vital platform for nurturing young talent and preserving the cultural heritage of blues music. By focusing on ensemble work and community engagement, the camp not only enhances musical skills but also fosters personal growth and social development among participants. This initiative highlights the importance of arts education in building confidence and teamwork in youth, offering them a creative outlet and a sense of belonging. The camp's ability to attract participants from various regions underscores its impact and the universal appeal of music as a tool for education and community building.
What's Next?
The camp will culminate in a final concert on July 10, where participants will showcase their progress and the skills they have developed over the week. This event provides an opportunity for the young musicians to perform in front of an audience, further boosting their confidence and stage presence. The concert, held at 1014 S. Michigan, is open to the public with tickets priced at $10. The success of this year's camp may lead to further expansion and partnerships, potentially increasing its reach and influence in promoting music education and cultural appreciation.
