CropLife India is urging a review of India's regulatory framework for crop protection products, warning that current restrictions on existing solutions, without the introduction of better alternatives, are narrowing options for Indian farmers. Indian farmers currently
have access to approximately 380 active ingredients for crop protection, significantly fewer than the around 1,200 available globally. To address this, CropLife India has proposed a five-year Regulatory Data Protection (RDP) regime for data generated during the registration of new crop protection products. This protection aims to incentivize companies to invest in and introduce newer technologies, including more selective and environmentally safer 'green molecules,' thereby expanding the range of solutions available to farmers. The organization emphasizes that decisions to restrict existing molecules should be based on established scientific literature and consider implications for farmers.
