What's Happening?
DRDGOLD has successfully commissioned a new elution circuit and smelt house at its Far West Gold Recoveries, marking a significant milestone in its Vision 2028 program. The facility, completed on time and within budget, poured its first doré gold bar,
a semi-pure alloy of gold, on July 14. This development is part of a broader R10-billion capital expenditure program aimed at increasing plant throughput and extending mine life. The new facility will enhance monthly plant throughput to 1.2 million tons and contribute to a 16-year mine life. The project is part of DRDGOLD's efforts to optimize its asset portfolio and improve operational resilience.
Why It's Important?
The commissioning of the new smelt house is a critical step in DRDGOLD's Vision 2028, which aims to increase gold production and extend the life of its operations. By enhancing throughput and production capacity, DRDGOLD is positioning itself for long-term growth and improved financial performance. The project also demonstrates the company's commitment to sustainable mining practices, with investments in renewable energy and infrastructure. This development is significant for the gold mining industry, as it highlights the potential for innovation and efficiency improvements in resource extraction and processing.
What's Next?
DRDGOLD will continue to ramp up operations at the new facility, with plans to commence material processing and treat material at the new carbon-in-leach circuit. The company will also conduct a full service of the existing circuit. As part of Vision 2028, DRDGOLD will proceed with other projects, including the construction of a solar plant and battery energy storage system, to further enhance energy security and reduce carbon footprint. The company will monitor the performance of the new facility and adjust strategies to maximize output and efficiency.
