What's Happening?
Duolingo, the language-learning app, has launched a new campaign called 'The Phonetic Collection' in conjunction with New York Fashion Week (NYFW). This initiative aims to playfully address the common challenge of pronouncing well-known fashion brand
names. The collection features wearable designs that incorporate the phonetic spellings of popular fashion brands. For example, pieces include a lime green purse with 'air-mess' (for Hermès) and a jacket with 'zhee-vahn-shee' (for Givenchy). Designer Megan O’Cain, known from Netflix’s 'Next in Fashion,' created these pieces. An accompanying out-of-home advertising campaign showcasing the collection will be displayed across New York City. Duolingo's Chief Marketing Officer, Manu Orssaud, stated that the campaign leverages the connection between language and passions, using the buzz of NYFW to encourage app downloads.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is significant as it highlights a unique and creative marketing strategy by Duolingo to engage with a new audience segment—fashion enthusiasts—by tapping into a relatable pain point: mispronouncing luxury brand names. By integrating language learning with fashion, Duolingo is expanding its brand relevance beyond traditional educational contexts. For the fashion industry, this campaign playfully acknowledges a cultural phenomenon and could spark conversations about accessibility and pretentiousness often associated with high fashion. The use of a designer from a popular reality show also adds a layer of pop culture appeal, potentially increasing the campaign's reach and impact among a younger, digitally-savvy demographic.
What's Next?
The 'Phonetic Collection' will be featured in an out-of-home campaign across New York City and a runway video debuting on YouTube. A two-day pop-up event from September 9-10 at Null Object boutique and gallery will allow attendees to bid their Duolingo streak for a chance to win pieces from the collection. Duolingo will likely monitor the campaign's effectiveness in driving app downloads and user engagement, particularly among those interested in fashion. The success of this creative approach could lead to similar cross-industry collaborations for Duolingo in the future, further diversifying its marketing efforts and expanding its user base.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond its immediate marketing objectives, Duolingo's 'Phonetic Collection' touches upon deeper cultural and social dynamics. The difficulty in pronouncing certain foreign fashion brand names often creates a sense of exclusion or intimidation for consumers. By humorously addressing this, Duolingo is not only promoting language learning but also subtly challenging the elitism sometimes perceived in the fashion world. This campaign fosters a more inclusive environment by normalizing the learning process and making it fun. It also exemplifies how brands can use wit and cultural insight to create memorable and impactful campaigns that resonate with a broad audience, transcending their core product or service.
