What's Happening?
Hawthorne Race Course has entered a preliminary agreement to sell its track for $90 million to ALLIMAC 2023 LLC, a Delaware-based shell company. This sale could lead to the closure of the racetrack unless another buyer intervenes in bankruptcy court.
The track, located in Stickney, Illinois, has been struggling financially and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February to manage over $100 million in debt. The Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association remains hopeful that the track can be saved, emphasizing its economic importance to various sectors. Despite efforts to market the site as a racetrack, its industrial zoning and strategic location near Chicago make it attractive for other developments.
Why It's Important?
The potential closure of Hawthorne Race Course would mark the end of professional horse racing in the Chicago area, following the closure of Arlington International Racecourse in 2021. This would have significant economic implications, affecting jobs and businesses reliant on the racing industry, from trainers and jockeys to suppliers and local vendors. The site's transformation into a data center or other industrial use could provide economic benefits, but it would also signify a cultural and historical loss for the region. The situation highlights the challenges faced by traditional industries in adapting to changing economic landscapes and the impact of competition from casinos and video gambling.
What's Next?
A bankruptcy court hearing is scheduled to determine whether ALLIMAC will be authorized as the stalking horse bid, setting the minimum bid for the property. Interested parties have until Tuesday to submit formal bids, with an auction, if necessary, on July 7, and a sale hearing on July 13. The outcome will determine the future of the site and whether horse racing can continue at Hawthorne. The track's state authorization to build racinos could attract gaming companies, offering a potential lifeline for the racing industry. However, securing financing and navigating the competitive gaming market remain significant hurdles.
