What's Happening?
Colliers International Group Inc. (TSX and NASDAQ: CIGI) announced that its Canadian engineering platform, Englobe Corporation, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Obsidian Engineering Corp. Obsidian is a Calgary-based multidisciplinary
engineering firm specializing in engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) services for private-sector clients. This acquisition is set to expand Englobe's capabilities, increase its scale across Western Canada, and establish a significant presence in Canada's critical energy infrastructure market. Founded in 2017, Obsidian employs over 400 professionals and has completed more than 3,500 projects in Canada's energy and data center sectors, including natural gas processing facilities, thermal facilities, pipelines, well pads, CO2 infrastructure, and renewable energy solutions. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is strategically important for Colliers as it establishes a meaningful position in Canada's growing energy sector. Elias Mulamoottil, Chief Investment Officer and CEO of Engineering at Colliers, highlighted that this investment aligns with Canada's positioning as an oil and gas superpower, and Obsidian's extensive qualifications are expected to drive significant opportunities across Colliers' global platform. For Englobe, the acquisition brings highly complementary expertise in EPCM project delivery, enhancing its ability to support clients throughout the lifecycle of complex energy and industrial infrastructure projects. The integration of Obsidian's technical expertise and established reputation is anticipated to strengthen Englobe's market position and service offerings, particularly in Western Canada.
What's Next?
Following the expected closure of the transaction in the fourth quarter of 2026, Obsidian's senior team will become significant shareholders of Englobe and will play a key leadership role. This integration is part of Colliers' unique partnership model, which aims to preserve entrepreneurial culture and ensure meaningful inside ownership. The combined entity will focus on leveraging Obsidian's expertise in Canada's energy and data center markets to expand service delivery and client support. The move is expected to create long-term stability and opportunities for Obsidian's professionals, as stated by Mark Czechowsky, CEO of Obsidian, who noted the alignment of cultures and values with Englobe and Colliers' decentralized operating philosophy.
Beyond the Headlines
The acquisition reflects a broader trend of consolidation within the engineering and professional services sectors, particularly as companies seek to capitalize on growing demands in critical infrastructure and energy markets. Colliers' strategy of acquiring specialized firms like Obsidian, which has a strong track record in diverse energy projects including renewable solutions, indicates a forward-looking approach to a diversified energy landscape. This move also underscores the increasing importance of EPCM services in managing complex projects from conception to completion, a critical factor for efficiency and success in large-scale industrial and energy developments. The emphasis on a 'perpetual partnership model' suggests a long-term investment strategy aimed at retaining talent and fostering continued growth within acquired entities.
