Mitsubishi Materials announced an investment of approximately 8 billion yen ($52 million) to expand its tungsten recycling capacity at its subsidiary, Japan New Metals. This investment, which includes
a 2 billion yen subsidy from Japan's industry ministry, aims to double the annual capacity for producing ammonium paratungstate (APT) at the Akita plant to 2,400 tons in tungsten trioxide-equivalent. Equipment installation is slated to begin in fiscal year 2026, with operations expected to commence in April 2029. Japan New Metals, the sole integrated producer of tungsten products in Japan, plans to increase its use of domestic tungsten scrap to replace about 1,200 tons per year of imported intermediate materials. This initiative is a direct response to China's export restrictions on critical minerals, highlighting Japan's strategic efforts to secure stable supplies.
