What's Happening?
SEVENTEEN members Jeonghan and Joshua have set a new record for first-week sales for a K-pop unit album with their first mini-album, 'DREAMSCAPE'. According to Hanteo Chart, the album sold 804,949 copies within its first week (October 19-25). This achievement
follows an initial record of over 650,000 copies sold on its release day alone, marking the highest first-day sales for a K-pop unit album. The album has also garnered international recognition, entering the 'Worldwide iTunes Albums' chart at number six, topping China's QQ Music 'Digital Best-Selling Albums' list, and securing the number one spot on Japan's Oricon 'Daily Album Ranking' for two consecutive days. The title track, '12 o'clock', also performed strongly, entering the top ranks of domestic and international charts and reaching number 34 on the 'Worldwide iTunes Songs' chart. Its music video quickly surpassed 10 million views and appeared on overseas YouTube 'Daily Popular Music Videos' in multiple countries, including South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Why It's Important?
This sales milestone for Jeonghan and Joshua highlights the growing global influence and commercial power of K-pop unit groups. Achieving over 800,000 first-week sales for a unit album demonstrates a significant expansion of the K-pop market beyond full group releases, indicating a strong and dedicated fanbase willing to support sub-unit projects. This success can encourage other K-pop agencies to invest more in unit activities, potentially diversifying the K-pop landscape and offering more varied content to fans. The international chart performance, particularly in major music markets like China, Japan, and the iTunes worldwide chart, underscores K-pop's continued penetration into global music consumption. This trend contributes to the U.S. music industry by increasing the diversity of music available and influencing global music trends, potentially leading to more collaborations and cross-cultural exchanges.
What's Next?
Jeonghan and Joshua are scheduled to embark on a performance tour titled 'JEONGHAN X JOSHUA JOURNEY INTO [DREAMING]', which will span six cities both domestically and internationally. The initial concert, set for October 30 to November 1 at Incheon Inspire Arena, has already sold out during the FC membership pre-sale, indicating high demand. The tour will continue with stops in Saitama, Macau, Taipei, Busan, and Hong Kong. This tour will further capitalize on the album's success and allow the duo to connect directly with their global fanbase. The continued touring and promotional activities are expected to maintain their momentum and further solidify their standing as a successful K-pop unit. Their performance in these various markets will also provide valuable insights into the geographical distribution and engagement levels of their international audience.
Beyond the Headlines
The success of Jeonghan and Joshua's unit album reflects a broader strategic shift within the K-pop industry towards leveraging individual members' strengths and expanding artistic expressions through sub-units. This approach allows groups to maintain relevance and engagement during periods between full group comebacks, offering fresh content and catering to diverse fan preferences. It also provides members with opportunities to explore different musical styles and concepts, fostering individual growth and artistic development. The strong sales figures and international chart performance suggest that fans are increasingly receptive to these unit endeavors, viewing them as integral parts of the overall group's narrative rather than mere side projects. This trend could lead to a more fragmented yet dynamic K-pop market, where individual members and units play increasingly significant roles in shaping the industry's global footprint and artistic direction.
