What's Happening?
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has awarded the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) and Product Identification Scheme (PIS) certificates to 14 manufacturing companies in Imo State. This initiative is part of SON's efforts to ensure
that locally manufactured products meet Nigerian industrial standards. The companies receiving MANCAP certification include Paulbert Crown Oil Ltd., Kingdom Pride Investment Ltd., and others, while three companies received MANCAP revalidation. Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, Director-General of SON, emphasized the organization's commitment to supporting local manufacturers through initiatives like subsidized standards acquisition and reduced testing fees. The certification aims to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian products and ensure consumer confidence. SON has warned that the certification is subject to continuous compliance with standards, and non-compliance could lead to withdrawal of the certificates.
Why It's Important?
The awarding of MANCAP certificates is significant as it underscores the importance of quality assurance in boosting the competitiveness of Nigerian products both locally and internationally. By ensuring that products meet industrial standards, SON is helping to build consumer trust and facilitate market acceptance. This move is particularly crucial for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria, as it provides them with the necessary support to compete in a global market. The certification not only enhances consumer confidence but also encourages other manufacturers to adhere to quality standards, thereby improving the overall quality of products in the market. This initiative could lead to increased economic growth and development within the region by promoting local industries.
What's Next?
SON plans to conduct periodic factory inspections and laboratory testing to ensure sustained product quality among certified companies. This ongoing oversight is intended to maintain high standards and prevent any deviation from established norms. Manufacturers who have not yet obtained certification are encouraged to do so to benefit from the increased market acceptance and consumer confidence that comes with MANCAP certification. The organization’s continued support for local manufacturers through various initiatives is expected to further enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian products in the future.
