What's Happening?
The Columbus Blue Jackets, in collaboration with Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS), have initiated their annual 'Recycle the Game' program. This initiative encourages fans to donate new or gently used hockey
equipment at OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rinks through September. The program is designed to make hockey more accessible by providing affordable gear to local players. Donated equipment is sanitized and sold at the Blue Jackets Equipment Sale, with proceeds benefiting the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation. Last year, the sale included over 2,000 pieces of equipment and supported 185 families. Participants in the drive receive an exclusive ticket offer for a select 2026-27 Blue Jackets home game.
Why It's Important?
The 'Recycle the Game' initiative is significant as it addresses the financial barriers that often prevent young athletes from participating in hockey. By providing affordable equipment, the program supports the growth of youth hockey and encourages broader participation in the sport. This initiative not only benefits individual players and families but also strengthens community ties and promotes physical activity among youth. The involvement of the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation ensures that proceeds are reinvested into the community, fostering a sustainable model for sports development.
What's Next?
As the 'Recycle the Game' program continues through September, the Columbus Blue Jackets are likely to see increased community engagement and participation in youth hockey. The success of the initiative could inspire similar programs in other regions, further promoting accessibility in sports. The Blue Jackets may also explore additional partnerships or expand the program to include other types of sports equipment, enhancing their community impact.
