What's Happening?
Universal Studios Hollywood has introduced a new Express Access add-on, charging visitors $20 to $25 to bypass the standby line for its popular new 'Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift' roller coaster. This new fee allows one-time skip-the-line access to the attraction,
which typically has wait times ranging from 90 minutes to two hours. The 'Fast & Furious' coaster is not included in the park's existing Universal Express or Universal Express Unlimited packages, which offer line-skipping privileges for other popular rides. This pricing strategy mirrors Disneyland's Lightning Lane Single Pass, which charges separate fees for one-time access to high-demand attractions like Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers.
Why It's Important?
This new pricing strategy by Universal Studios Hollywood signifies a growing trend in theme park operations to monetize high-demand attractions through individual paid access. For Universal, it represents an additional revenue stream and a way to manage crowd flow on its newest and most popular ride. For park visitors, it offers a choice: either endure potentially long wait times or pay a premium for convenience. This move could lead to increased revenue for the park but also raises questions about equity of access, as guests who cannot afford the extra fee may experience longer waits. It also reflects the competitive nature of the theme park industry, where parks are constantly seeking ways to enhance the guest experience while maximizing profitability.
