The Cronos blockchain, operated by Crypto.com, ceased block production on Sunday after an estimated $75 million exploit targeted Tectonic, its largest decentralized lending protocol. Validators were forced to halt the entire chain to contain the attack.
Onchain researcher Weilin Li estimated that approximately $6 million of the stolen funds were transferred to Ethereum before the halt, leaving around $60 million immobilized on the Cronos network. The chain remained down on Monday as investigations continued with support from industry security teams. Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek confirmed that the exchange and app were operating normally and customer funds were safe, promising a postmortem report. Tectonic, which allows users to deposit crypto for interest and borrow against collateral, saw its deposits collapse from $121.7 million to roughly $3 million, a 97.5% drop in 30 days. The attack was described as a 'Mango-market style pump-and-borrow price manipulation,' where the attacker inflated Tectonic's governance token, TONIC, by 100-fold within 20 minutes to borrow against it.
