A recent study has found that increasing protein intake to 1.5 g/kg/day with whey protein does not improve muscle power, strength, physical performance, or muscle mass in healthy older adults. The study, which was a 24-week randomized, placebo-controlled
trial, also noted that while whey protein increased circulating IGF-1, this did not translate into meaningful improvements in muscle outcomes. The findings challenge the belief that simply increasing protein intake is sufficient to preserve muscle in older adults, emphasizing that resistance exercise remains the primary stimulus for maintaining muscle strength and function.
