What's Happening?
United American Land has announced plans to transform the former Macy's flagship store in Downtown Brooklyn into a five-floor 'experiential destination' called BKX. The 440,000-square-foot retail hub at 422 Fulton Street will feature flagship retail,
immersive entertainment, food halls, destination dining, wellness concepts, cultural programming, and large-format branded experiences. This development follows the closure of Macy's in January 2025 and a subsequent light installation that ran through March of that year. The project is described as one of New York City's largest and most ambitious retail developments, aiming to reimagine the iconic site for modern consumer preferences. The design will accommodate flagship retailers, entertainment venues, and emerging brands, with a central atrium designed by experiential design firm iCrave.
Why It's Important?
The transformation of the former Macy's site into BKX represents a significant shift in retail strategy, focusing on creating a multi-faceted consumer experience rather than traditional retail. This development reflects broader trends in urban retail, where consumers seek destinations that combine shopping with entertainment, dining, and cultural experiences. The project is strategically located above a major transit hub, providing direct access to 11 subway lines and the Long Island Rail Road, which could attract a high volume of visitors and commuters. This initiative could serve as a model for other urban retail spaces looking to adapt to changing consumer behaviors and preferences.
What's Next?
Leasing for BKX is currently underway, with the project team aiming to attract flagship retailers and entertainment venues. The development is expected to draw significant interest from brands seeking high-profile urban locations. As the project progresses, it will be important to monitor how it impacts the local economy and retail landscape in Downtown Brooklyn. The success of BKX could influence future retail developments in urban areas, particularly in how they integrate various consumer experiences under one roof.
