What's Happening?
The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a grant opportunity totaling $58 million for its Accelerating Scale-up and Pre-piloting of Emerging Chemical Technologies (ASPECT) program. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), DE-FOA-0003647, aims to support
research, development, and pre-pilot testing of innovative technologies that produce chemicals from alternative and waste feedstocks. The program is divided into two topic areas, each with subtopic areas, designed to accommodate technologies at various stages of development. Topic Area 1 focuses on advancing technologies in the R&D phase, from early-stage research to bench scale and closer to pre-pilot scale. Topic Area 2 targets technologies ready to move from R&D to full pre-pilot scale design, construction, and operation. The goal is to advance promising chemical technologies that utilize alternative feedstocks through multiple levels of maturity, ultimately moving them into integrated pre-pilot systems.

The application process for the ASPECT program is underway, with a required Concept Paper due date of October 9, 2026, and a Full Application due date of December 1, 2026. The DOE expects to make approximately 10 awards, with individual awards ranging from $2 million to $20 million. Eligible applicants include various government entities, businesses, non-profits, and educational institutions, though participation for institutions of higher education is limited in Topic Area 2. The DOE has also compiled a Teaming Partner List to encourage collaboration among potential applicants. Successful projects will proceed with research, development, and pre-pilot testing, aiming to advance their technologies towards market readiness and contribute to a more sustainable chemical industry.
