What's Happening?
The Ketchikan Theatre Ballet, a nonprofit dance school, is moving from its downtown Mission Street location after almost 40 years. The relocation will see the ballet school move into the former Holy Name Catholic School building by the end of the year,
with plans to open in January. According to Ketchikan Theatre Ballet director Claire Stickwan, the move is necessary because the school has outgrown its current aging facility. The existing building requires significant and costly repairs, including addressing heating and ventilation issues, deteriorating floors, and low ceilings. Additionally, parking at the downtown location has become problematic, especially during busy summer months. The new facility, previously a school, already possesses suitable general facilities, though it will require the installation of mirrors, ballet barres, and dance floors before opening. This move is anticipated to be more cost-effective than repairing the current building and will provide much-needed additional space, including an extra studio, eliminating the need for a separate storage unit.
Why It's Important?
This relocation is important for the Ketchikan Theatre Ballet as it signifies a strategic move to accommodate growth and ensure the long-term sustainability of a significant cultural institution in the community. By moving to a larger, more suitable facility, the ballet can expand its class offerings and cater to a growing number of interested students, as highlighted by Director Claire Stickwan. This expansion directly impacts the availability of arts education for local youth and contributes to the cultural vibrancy of Ketchikan. The decision to invest in a new location rather than continuing with costly repairs on an outdated building demonstrates a commitment to providing a high-quality learning environment. Furthermore, the move could free up the former downtown space for new commercial or community development, potentially revitalizing that area. The continued operation and expansion of the ballet school also support local employment for dance instructors and administrative staff, contributing to the local economy.
What's Next?
The Ketchikan Theatre Ballet's immediate next step is its performance of 'The Nutcracker' in December. Following this production, the organization plans to finalize its move to the former Holy Name Catholic School. The new location is expected to be fully operational and open for classes in January. Between now and the end of the year, significant work will be undertaken to prepare the new facility, including the installation of essential dance infrastructure such as mirrors, ballet barres, and specialized dance floors. The transition will also involve moving all equipment and administrative functions. The school will likely focus on communicating the new location and class schedules to its current students and the wider community to ensure a smooth transition. This period will be crucial for adapting to the new space and leveraging its benefits, such as the additional studio and increased capacity for classes.
Beyond the Headlines
The move of the Ketchikan Theatre Ballet reflects a broader challenge faced by many long-standing community organizations: balancing historical ties with the practicalities of growth and facility maintenance. While the current staff, many of whom were once students at the Mission Street location, feel a bittersweet connection to the old building, the decision prioritizes the future and expansion of the ballet. This situation highlights the ongoing need for non-profit arts organizations to secure adequate and sustainable infrastructure to continue their mission. The repurposing of the former Holy Name Catholic School building also demonstrates a creative solution to urban development, where older structures can be given new life to serve community needs. This trend of adapting existing buildings for new purposes can be seen as an environmentally conscious approach to development, reducing the need for new construction while preserving community assets.
