What's Happening?
Harvard-Westlake's ambitious $200 million River Park Sports Complex in Studio City is nearing completion, with the school targeting early 2027 for the facility to be operational. The complex, which spans 16 acres, includes a wide array of amenities such
as an 8,200-square-foot weight room, two gymnasiums, a 52-meter pool, eight tennis courts, and two all-weather turf playing fields. Additional features include a yoga room, 11 locker rooms, a cafeteria, and advanced security systems. The project, which began in April 2024, replaces the Weddington Golf & Tennis Center and has faced community opposition during its development. The facility still requires inspections and a Certificate of Occupancy from the city before it can open. The school has added new sports, including flag football and girls lacrosse, in anticipation of the new field space.
Why It's Important?
The completion of the River Park Sports Complex represents a significant investment in sports and educational infrastructure, potentially enhancing the athletic experience for Harvard-Westlake students and visiting teams. The facility's state-of-the-art amenities could attract regional sports tournaments, boosting local engagement and economic activity. However, the project has also been a point of contention within the community, highlighting the challenges of balancing development with local interests. The complex's opening could set a precedent for future educational and sports facility projects in urban areas, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and city approvals in large-scale developments.
What's Next?
The next steps for the River Park Sports Complex involve passing city inspections and obtaining the necessary Certificate of Occupancy. Once operational, the school plans to use the first year to optimize the facility's use, manage traffic patterns, and integrate public access to certain areas. The community will soon have a clearer view of the complex as the 14-foot-high fences are removed. The school administration, led by Head of Athletics Terry Barnum and Communications Director Ari Engelberg, will continue to update stakeholders on progress and operational plans.
